A rather unproductive day, yup that's me!
hmm...maybe I should finish up that lab report for APSC 100?? hmm....nope I think I would rather blog about my super unproductive day. Although I've managed to complete almost no work as of yet I did however spent most of my day watching debate. Strange, you say?? Actually not quite so...I never realized how debating could be so interesting until this afternoon when I watched my good friend Siyu at it. Siyu's a friend of mine from my days at York Mills and this weekend he was here at Queen's representing UT's engineering debating team. *sniff sniff* I wish more of my old friends would come visit me...I'm feeling so lonely =( Siyu's an excellent debator so anyone going up against him best beware! So what fascinated me most about debate is the formality of it all. At the start of the round, the spectators in the room all rise as the procession of debators, the timekeeper and the speaker is lead into the room by a person carrying the "mace" which is this giant club that he bangs on the floor as a ritual before the group marches in. Then as the sides come out to make their arguments, they refer to people is ways such as "Mr. Speaker", "honourable" so-and-so and "members of the gallery" (I was a member of the gallery!! =P). But above all, my favourite part of whole proceeding was the table slapping. OMG I loved it!! It sure as hell beats ordinary boring clapping! =) I thought before that slapping tables or in some cases, the side boards of the balcony in Grant Hall was a practice reserved for rowdy engineers but not so! It was very entertaining to see old guys, 50-60 year olds doing the same thing. All of the speakers were extremely gifted in my opinion because it's definitely not an easy task to be thrown a topic and a viewpoint (that might not correspond with your own) and be required to defend it after only 15 minutes of preparation. If I were in their shoes, I probably would have pissed myself within five considering how much I hate both confrontation and public speaking. Good job everyone especially to Siyu and Nan! This has definitely been an experience (I mean watching a debate) I recommend to all of you out there! =)
